Our History

June 1967                           The first clubhouse opened in a house at 587 Lexington Avenue and                                               the first President was Dr. Williams McAfee

December 1967                  Moved into larger house at 413 Hays Avenue

May 1968                           The Jackson, Tennessee Boys Club was incorporated and became a                                                  member of the Boys Club of America

June 1968                           Moved into old YMCA Building in the Bemis Community

1969                                   The Club became a member of United Way

May 1971                           The 501c3 status was granted from the Internal Revenue Service

January 1972                      Moved into Old Carnegie Library Building on College Street

September 1973                  Moved into the Westwood Gardens facility

October 1975                      Started programming for girls

July 1978                            Opened The Boy’s Club Henry Felton Outdoor Olympic Swimming                                                 Pool adjacent to the facility

1977 - 1980                         Selected as a pilot for BCA National Health Development Project                                                     with funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the J.M. Foundation

1981                                    Established the Consolidated Insurance Services/Jackson Boys Club                                                 Scholarship

May 1985                            Boys Club member Angela Wilbourn became the first Jackson                                                           member to be selected as State Youth of the Year and Runner-Up                                                                     Youth of the Year

March 1989                         Name changed to Boys & Girls Club of Jackson, Inc.

1990                                    Opened East Unit Boys & Girls Club

1991                                    Opened Outreach Units in Merry Lane, Allenton Heights and Lincoln                                               Courts

February 1994                     City of Jackson agreed to build a new Boys & Girls Club on 16.2                                                      acres located at Lexington and Hwy 70 Bypass

January 1995                       East Unit moved into its present facility at 832 Lexington Avenue                                                     (13,200 sq. ft.)

October 1996                       Opened B&GC within Whitehall Elementary School

November 2000                   Opened B&GC Brownsville Unit

August 2002                        Opened B&GC within Isaac Lane Technology Magnet School

September 2003                   Brownsville Club moves into the former Carver High School

November 2003                   Lonestar (Country Music Group) & Home Depot install a                                                                    new playground at the East Unit

2005                                     Proctor & Gamble donates $75,000 over three years for capital                                                            improvements

December 2005                    Whitehall Elementary School Site closed.

2006                                      Boys & Girls Club reaches over 1,300 children

December 2007                     Opened the CLUB-Teen Center at the 261 McCowat location in the                                                     Zion Church of Jackson Community Center

January 2009                         Teen Center closed
